Wow... impressive view! I must admit, I would never have thought that the camera attached to the booster could survive re-entry.

They never make it high enough for that to be a concern. They just kick the shuttle in the pants, and then get ditched at about 46km altitude (though they're still going so damn fast they still climb another 20km or so before starting to fall back to Earth).

By comparison, SpaceShipOne was reaching 100 - 112km altitude, and was still considered suborbital (and not having to deal with the stresses of re-entry).

Ah... that would explain it then. Incredible that they still make another 20km upwards after separation.
