Digital Breakdown

As many have noted lately, frequent blog commenter Matt "DanielJacksonMPC" Carpenter (and the unofficial ST-v-SW.Net forums at Digital-Breakdown.com which he ran) have gone missing, and there was much concern in the community.

He is alive and well. But, Digital Breakdown won't be back for the time being.

There are so many things that can happen in our lives that remind us how silly little hobbies like this one really are ... I went through one recently myself. As I told him, take some comfort in the fact that people you've never met were concerned about you.

In this already-decadent age, the additional dehumanizing effect of the internet makes that a wonderful thing, indeed.

Well, that'd explain it. However, I'd give even odds that some at SDN would even take this incident and twist it into a very bad version of it, like what they did with the Katrina incident, even if it's just in their treehouse, the Hall of Shame.

When you asked if you would have permission to mention what happened, I didn't expect a full out and out blog post.

Thank you, everyone else, for your concern for me. Really. It means a lot to me to know that there are people out there other than my family and what few friends I have that care about me.

As for SDN...I really hope they don't spin this. Surely even they have standards. Or so I vainly hope, anyway.

Hey, I edited the post, removing the detail. I didn't see how it could possibly be spun negatively. I value my privacy too, though, which is why I'd asked first. But still, I guess I took the permission too far. Hopefully the edit is more to your liking.

No, no, no, it's okay. Go ahead and put the detail back. I was just surprised that it was made into an entire blog post, not dismayed or anything. I was just expecting a reply in the comments of that other post where you mentioned you'd speak to me, is what I meant. My bad.

Look what happened when you started mentioning Katrina. That involved thousands, many getting killed and homeless throughout the gulf. Since the specifics have been removed, I'll say just that the small amount of detail that was up before could have been fuel for the spin mills after the crap with Katrina. The stuff that came up with Katrina just blew my mind at just how demented it was.

Okay, here are the contents of the e-mail I sent to Darkstar:

My month or so long absence was due to an unfortunate circumstance: while traveling with a friend to the movie theatre, in my friend's two-seater car, a drunk driver in a Hummer smashed into us from the side--the side that I was sitting on. My friend came out completely unharmed. The car was totaled. As for me? I came away mostly without injury, except for being thrown into a coma for apparently four weeks. I woke up out of it just last Wednesday, and was released from the hospital on Friday. Luckily, there was no permenant brain damage or anything, and my health insurance covered my medical bills. I've been trying to put together the parts of my life that went astray. My manager at work preserved my job, which was damned lucky, all things considered. But, I have been trying to keep up with a bunch of missed payments. Unfortunately, I do not foresee myself repurchasing and setting up Digital Breakdown to be a forum for your site again anytime soon, though I do want to get back to that, eventually. Thank you for your concern, and thank the others for me as well.

Hey, I just got wind of this and wanted to drop in and wish you well, Mr Carpenter. I know we've had our differences, but this sort of thing transcends our little debating hobby. I hope you're able to pick up the pieces of your life and move on with it. You have my best wishes, and, I'm sure, those of everyone else who know of this incident.
